There's something about the distinctive sound of a swingin' vibes player that brings to mind the heyday of jazz at the height of its popularity in the 40s and 50s. As a lead instrument in the jazz combo setting, vibes contribute variety and a break from what is often piano-dominated music. Vibes often carry the lead as they did in the big bands of the legendary Lionel Hampton (probably the most famous vibraphone player of all time) or they can be used to augment the ensemble as was often the case in pianist George Shearing's popular quintet.
